Cold and flu season generally runs from October through May in the US, with a peak between December and February. Cold and flu prevention begins by keeping the immune system healthy. Here are a few tips:
Fuel your body correctly
Avoid foods such as packaged baked goods, canned fruits and soda. The simple carbohydrates in these foods readily break down and release massive amounts of sugar into the bloodstream. Excess sugar is inflammatory to the body and compromises the immune system.
A deficiency of any of these nutrients can negatively affect the function of the immune system: zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A, B vitamins (especially folic acid), iron, copper, amino acids L-lysine and L-arginine, vitamin C and vitamin E. Correct choices of supplements—vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, probiotics and botanicals—support the immune system and help reduce the risk of disease.
Mind your mental health
Psychological health influences the immune system. Ordinarily, cortisol is released by the adrenals when a sudden burst of energy is needed. Whereas, compromised psychological health (for example: excessive stressful situations) cause cortisol levels to spike unnecessarily. Prolonged elevation of cortisol suppresses immune function.
Try salt therapy to help cold and flu
Salt therapy takes place in a spa-like room with salt-covered walls and floor. A session consists of sitting in a lounge chair and breathing deeply while pharmaceutical-grade salt is pulverized into microscopic particles and pushed into the room.
The salt particles enter the nasal passages and lungs, accelerating mucus clearance, reducing nasal and chest congestion, killing harmful bacteria and soothing the respiratory system. Salt therapy also has a relaxing effect on the nervous system.
Is salt therapy safe during cold and flu season?
HEPA air filters in the room capture and remove up to 99.97 percent of airborne particles, including viral particles, while activated carbon filters remove volatile organic compounds. A UV light kills 98.8 percent of bacteria and viruses on surfaces.
Salt therapy is clinically proven, natural, safe, and beneficial for every age group.
